Key goals in this class: Basic stitch, machine operations, paper patterns, and clothing closure This introductory class with Ashlie teaches the fundamentals of hand sewing, learning industrial machines, and reading paper patterns. By the end of the class, you will have a basic understanding of hand sewing, sewing tools, machine stitching, fabric knowledge, and paper patterns. You will also have the start of your own Sewing Portfolio. WEEK 1 Introductory to Basic Sewing Safety, sewing tools, and different types of stitches. learning your fabric and how and when to use different stitches. Materials needed: One 3-ring binder, Plastic sleeves for the binder Basic sewing kit- Hand needles, dressmaker or silk pins, thread, pin cushion, marking tape, fabric pen, fabric chalk, fabric scissors. Kits can be purchased at Joann’s, Walmart, or any fabric store. If you buy a kit, it will have all these items included) 2 yards of Muslin fabric. (Fabric can be purchased at Joann’s, or any fabric store) Pen and note paper or notebook for notes. WEEK 2 Creating the hand stitches and adding the first pages to your portfolio. Introduction of industrial sewing machines and machines sewing safety. Materials needed: Same list as last week, plus Worksheets will be provided WEEK 3 Creating machine stitches. Introduction to zippers, buttons, and other closures. Introduction to measurements and paper patterns. Materials needed: Same list as last week, plus Paper skirt pattern (Butterick preferred) make sure to get the size you wanted. Zipper (standard and invisible) Buttons Clasps Worksheets will be provided Week 4 Reading paper patterns and basic layout, pinning fabric, and cutting out the pattern pieces with fabric. Learning about different interfacing and applying interfacing to pieces needed. Start sewing shirts. Materials needed: Sewing kits/Notebook and pen Skirt patterns Fabric and interfacing (light interfacing) Lining (optional), depending on what type of fabric you choose. Read the back of your pattern for fabric suggestions Week 5 Finish skirts Materials needed: Sewing kits/Notebook and pen Skirt patterns Fabric and interfacing (light interfacing) Lining (optional), depending on what type of fabric you choose. Read the back of your pattern for fabric suggestions Week 6 Skirt showcase, course wrap-up, and completion certificates.
